There are many routes to climb Kilimanjaro, but the Northern Circuit Route is considered the best in terms of scenery, acclimatisation, and success rates. The Northern Circuit Route is the newest and longest route on Kilimanjaro, taking nine days to complete. The route offers a unique experience, as it takes you through diverse landscapes – from rainforests to alpine deserts and glacial valleys. The route also has a high success rate, as it allows for a longer acclimatization period, which reduces the chances of altitude sickness.
Day by Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
- Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
- Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
- Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower Camp
- Day 5: Lava Tower Camp to Moir Camp
- Day 6: Moir Camp to Buffalo Camp
- Day 7: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp
- Day 8: Third Cave Camp to School Hut Camp
- Day 9: School Hut Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
On the first day, you will drive to Londorossi Gate, where you will complete registration and begin your hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
On the second day, you will hike through the beautiful forest and up to Shira 1 Camp. You will also have an opportunity to see the stunning views of the Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut
On the third day, you will hike to Moir Hut, where you will get stunning views of Mount Meru and the Kenyan plains.
Day 4: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
On the fourth day, you will hike through the Lengai forest and up to Buffalo Camp. You will also see beautiful views of the Western Breach and the Northern Circuit.
Day 5: Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave
On the fifth day, you will hike through the alpine desert and up to Rongai Third Cave. You will also get stunning views of the Mawenzi Tarn and the Saddle.
Day 6: Rongai Third Cave to School Hut
On the sixth day, you will hike through the barren landscape to School Hut. You will also prepare for the final ascent to the summit.
Day 7: School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
On the seventh day, you will begin your climb to the summit. You will hike through the rocky terrain to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. You will then descend to Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
On the eighth day, you will hike through the beautiful Mweka forest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates and celebrate your accomplishment.
Day 9: Departure
On the final day, you will depart from Moshi or Arusha and reflect on the incredible journey you just completed.
